Electoral Reform: Making Every Vote Count
Making Every Vote Count: Electoral Reform Town Hall
A once in a generation chance to act—so we have to get it right
New Democrat MPs are pushing the Liberal government to deliver on their promise to make the 2015 election the last one under our unfair, winner-takes-all voting system. I’m writing to you today about this once in a lifetime opportunity to change our broken electoral system.
The outdated, winner-takes-all system gave Stephen Harper—and now the Liberals—100% of the power in Ottawa with just 39% of the vote. As a result, millions of votes effectively don’t count, disenfranchising voters who believe their voices aren’t heard.
When I travelled to Norway, I saw Proportional Representation working so well, forming stable parliaments where parties cooperate and truly govern to benefit the people. And I'm encouraged that Proportional Representation elects more women and creates more diverse governments.
We can make a change to reflect a diverse and inclusive modern Canada. A system where every vote counts, no matter which party you voted for. Like New Democrats in the last election, the Liberals have also promised change. Let's hold them to it.
