Malcolmson Thrilled by $19 Million in Federal Funding Announced for Health & Science Centre at VIU

NANAIMO—Sheila Malcolmson, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Ladysmith, is applauding Vancouver Island University (VIU) following news of a $35.9 million in provincial/federal investment in a new Health and Science Centre, including $19.4 million from the Government of Canada.

“I’m so proud of the great work VIU is doing in our region,” said Nanaimo—Ladysmith MP Sheila Malcolmson. “It’s a testament to Vancouver Island University’s vision that the federal government is investing in their success and innovation, and supporting good jobs for Nanaimo.”

The $19.4 million investment through the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund brings the federal government’s contributions to VIU over the past year to $30 million, including $9.5 million for the Marine, Automotive and Trades Complex expansion and $1.1 million for the District Geo-Exchange Energy System project.

The new $39.9 million Health and Science Centre will be the single largest development on VIU’s campus. It will allow most of VIU’s health and chemistry programs to share one facility, alongside new health teaching labs and the Applied Environmental Research Laboratory.
