MP Malcolmson Supports Marina Redevelopment Plan

Letter of support for the Port of Nanaimo

October 9th 2018

To whom it may concern,

RE: Port of Nanaimo Inner Harbour Marina Redevelopment

I support the Port of Nanaimo’s inner harbour marina redevelopment proposal, as shaped by a good public process and a demonstrated need to rebuild infrastructure mostly untouched since the sixties.

Rebuilding the marina could further enhance Nanaimo’s impressive harbour, waterfront walkway, and the businesses and community festivals built around it. The simultaneous development of Snuneymuxw’s Saysutshun (Newcastle Island) project could amplify the benefits of both, and my support is predicated on the expectation that the Port’s working cooperatively with Snuneymuxw First Nation as rights-holders.

I’m encouraged that the marina project assures enhanced use by Protection Island residents and commercial fishermen, both long-term key marina users. Continued seaplane operations are vital to Nanaimo’s leadership as a regional transportation hub. And I see the particular benefits for federal agencies including Marine RCMP, Coast Guard, the Navy, and Border Services Canada.
I support the Port’s $7.5 million federal funding request and am encouraged to have confirmed that NPA should be eligible for federal infrastructure funding. Do let me know if I can help further.

Nanaimo Harbour’s beauty, location, and strategic link to Vancouver Island’s transportation network make our city one of the most livable in Canada. I applaud the Nanaimo Port Authority and its partners and community members for picturing a revitalization plan that builds on our history and strengths.

Sincerely,

Sheila Malcolmson
