Petition to #SaveWildSalmon

West Coast wild salmon are under threat from disease, pollutants, and sea lice originating from open net-pen salmon farms. In 2016, my colleague, Fin Donnelly introduced Bill C-228 which, if adopted, would strengthen the Fisheries Act by requiring British Columbia salmon farms to move from harmful open net pens to safe closed containment systems. Unfortunately, due to lack of support from the Trudeau government, the bill was defeated.

I held a Town Hall meeting in July of this year with guests MP Fin Donnelly and Alexandra Morton, an independent biologist, on how the future of salmon aquaculture is closed containment. The technology exists, it is economically feasible, and the prospective jobs and economic opportunities are immense.

The Liberal government must remove these farms from the wild salmon migration route and transition this harmful industry to safe, land-based technology. There is no time for delay, Canada must invest in a safe, sustainable industry that protects wild salmon and employment, develops new technologies, jobs, and export opportunities.
